How We Plant Trees and Bushes

At TidyHammer, we don’t just drop a tree in a hole and walk away. We follow a detailed, battle-tested process to ensure your tree has the best possible start — especially when working with challenging soil types like Virginia red clay.
Here's how we do it:

1

Choosing the Right Spot

Every healthy tree starts with the right location. We evaluate your yard for sunlight, drainage, and available space, taking into account the tree’s mature size and root system. Picking the wrong place leads to poor growth — we don’t let that happen.

2

Digging the Proper Hole

We dig a wide and deep planting hole — 5 to 15 times larger than the nursery pot. Why? Because tight, narrow holes suffocate roots and delay growth. In tough clay soil, we dig even wider to give the roots room to breathe and expand.

3

Inspecting the Soil Profile

Once the pit is opened, we assess the soil layers to understand what we’re working with. In this case, the topsoil was shallow, with dense red clay and rocks just beneath the surface — a poor environment for healthy root growth. We decided to reuse the best soil we removed earlier by placing it at the bottom of the pit. This step ensures that roots have immediate access to nutrients, while the surrounding clay is loosened to improve drainage and airflow.

5

Setting the Tree

We gently place the tree so that the root flare (where the trunk widens) is at or just above ground level — not buried. Then we backfill with the improved soil mixture and tamp it down lightly to remove air pockets without crushing the roots.

6

Red Clay Seal & Mulch

To help the roots retain moisture, we apply a thin layer of red clay on top of the filled hole. This technique is especially helpful in dry and windy areas. Then we spread 2–3 inches of mulch around the base — not touching the trunk — to control weeds and lock in hydration.

7

Deep Watering

Right after planting, we deep-water the tree to soak the root zone completely. This helps settle the soil and gives the tree a strong start. We recommend daily watering for the first two weeks to help the tree adapt to its new environment.
